Motorcycle Accidents are the Cause of Most Deaths Across Florida

April 4, 2019

Motorcycle accidents cause severe injuries and large death totals because motorcyclists are vulnerable when on the road. Although, it’s legal to drive a motorcycle without a helmet in Florida, bikers should remember to put safety first to avoid brain injuries or death. According to studies by AAA, Florida has the highest number of motorcycle-related fatalities in the United States.

Florida Motorcycle Accident Statistics

There are many studies and statistics available regarding motorcycle accidents, but the majority of reports are a few years old. However, when thoroughly reviewing the numbers one can see correlations and patterns from the data.

Statistics cited from AAA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) also show:

  • 606 motorcyclists were killed in Florida in 2015. That was up 30 percent from 2014.

  • Motorcycles are involved in 20 percent of auto accident deaths - even with less motorcycles on the road than automobiles.

  • The national death rate was nearly cut in half from 2006 to 2014 - but Florida’s motorcycle fatality rate increased.

  • Miami-Dade County had the highest number of motorcycle fatalities in 2015 - with 67 fatalities.

The majority of these accidents involved impaired driving or speeding. However, from 2013 to 2015, not wearing a helmet was the cause of 40 percent of motorcyclist deaths. If you drive or ride on a motorcycle, be sure you wear a helmet, follow traffic laws, and watch out for other drivers. Doing those things can potentially save your life.
