“Why should I hire an Attorney?” “I do not trust attorneys.” “I can’t afford one.” “I found everything I need on the internet.” “I can do this on my own.”
With the growing costs of living, high unemployment and uncertain recovery of the economy, you have tightened your budget and are carefully selecting where you choose to spend your hard earned dollars. To top it all off, you find yourself with a legal problem and all of the worries associated with hiring an attorney race through your head. Despite the horror stories you may have heard from your friends, the jokes demeaning the profession and the costs associated with hiring an attorney, I advise you to hire an attorney anyway.
A few years ago, a potential client came to my office for a free consultation regarding a family law matter. I explained what The Ticktin Law Group could do for him, how much it would cost and the overall process. He indicated that the divorce process has been amicable thus far, but wanted to speak with an attorney because his wife had hired one. The potential client left the office without hiring me. About a week later, he called my office and confirmed that he did not require my services because he had worked out an agreement with his wife. I told him “good luck” and to consider the firm for any other legal issues.
About a month later, the potential client called my office distraught, stressed and worried about the document he just signed to resolve his divorce. He was having second thoughts and asked if there was anything I could do to fix some of the language in the agreement. Based on the situation, there was nothing I could do.
The moral of the story is to not let this be you. If the potential client had hired me from the beginning, I would have included language in the agreement make sure he was safe. I probably would have negotiated better terms and protected his interests. He thought everything was amicable. Unfortunately, when he finally realized that his wife’s attorney did not have his best interests in mind, it was too late. Needless to say, this gentleman will never make the same mistake. He will hire an attorney the next time he has a legal problem and will certainly be much happier with the outcome. You will be much happier with the outcome as well, if you take my advice and hire an attorney to handle your legal problems.
