Steps to Take After a Car Accident

When you get into a car accident, there are crucial steps you should follow to help make sure everyone is safe and to follow the law.

Check Yourself and Your Passengers for Injuries

If you’re injured you should call 911 immediately – or ask someone else to call. Also, try not to move, and wait for emergency help to get to the site. If you are able to move, check on your other passengers to see if they are okay.

Get to Safety

If you’re able to drive and your car is safe to drive, pull it to the side of the road. Otherwise, leave it where it is and get yourself to safety. If possible, wait until the police arrive to move your car – so they can see exactly where the accident occurred.

Call the Police

Whether your accident is minor or major, you should call 911. (That is, if you haven’t called already for any injured passenger.) The responding police officers will fill out an accident report and document the scene.

Wait for Help

Turn off your car and turn on your hazard lights.

Exchange Information

After making sure you and any passengers are unharmed, be sure to exchange contact and insurance information with the other driver.

Important Information to Exchange After a Car Accident

  1. Name and contact information
  2. Driver’s license and plate number
  3. Insurance company and policy number
  4. Location of the accident
  5. Type, color, and model of the vehicle

Document the Accident

In order to help protect yourself, you should take note of the following:

  1. Identify the police officers and get a copy of the accident report.
  2. Take pictures.
  3. Talk to any witnesses.
  4. Use a voice recorder on your phone to verify what the other party and witnesses have to say. Of course, you must disclose that you are recording them. However, the recordings can be used to your benefit in the days after the initial accident.
