The Ticktin Minute March 12, 2018 – Snowbirds to blame for auto accidents?

Snowbirds to blame for auto accidents?

Every year, during the months of October through April, the warm South Florida climate provides refuge for snowbirds. But as people head south for winter, there’s one thing we can be sure of: more auto accidents.

According to figures from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, more accidents occur during the winter months than any other time of the year.

In 2017, the months of January, March, October, December experienced the highest number of accidents. The least amount of accidents happened in the summer months of June and July.

During the winter it can seem like there are as many out-of-state license plates as Florida tags. Add increased traffic with the fact that snowbirds might be unaware of driving laws in Florida, and you’ve got a recipe for auto accidents.

Do your part to steer clear of an unfortunate incident. Staying alert and responsible when operating a motor vehicle. Abide by state laws and regulations, keep an eye out for potentially dangerous drivers, and avoid distractions like using a cell phone. A little bit of courtesy can go a long way, too.
