Should I do a Will or a Trust?

Posted By: Jamie Sasson

Q

I have a simple will that I would like to make a minor change to the beneficiaries on and need to know if this can be done by me or must I use secure an attorney to make this change a “legal” document? Also, I’ve been told that I really should consider changing my will to a trust in order to avoid probate fees, etc. Is changing the will to a trust a complicated and expensive change?

A

I would suggest doing a trust, with a pour over will.  It is not overly complicated and no too expensive.  If you want to just change beneficiaries on your will, you need to do a codicil, which I recommend you retain an attorney to do that is also not expensive.
