Can a Patent Attorney steel an idea?

Posted By: Ejola Cook

Q

How do I protect my idea/ invention from being stolen by my patent attorney?

A

Your patent attorney is bound by the code of ethics both from the Florida Bar, and the Patent Bar.  When you speak to, and work with your attorney you need to be candid in what you are trying to do.

The Florida Bar acknowledges that need for full disclosure and as such has put protections in place for clients seeking legal counsel.  There are only very limited and specific times a lawyer may disclose a communication between the lawyer and the client.

While you certainly should be careful, and secretive regarding your idea to anyone else, the one person you should be able to trust is your lawyer.
